CIA Counterterrorism Expert: Obama and Holder 'At War' with Agency
In the early days and weeks after Sept. 11, 2001, a small cadre of men (and a few women) with vast amounts of intelligence experience reported to the Langley, Va., headquarters of the CIA. These unsung heroes then were dispatched across the globe to run operations against the al-Qaida conspirators who leveled the World Trade Center and struck the nerve center of the U.S. military.
The FBI, a domestic law enforcement agency, did not have the ability or skills needed to track down and strike the attackers overseas. The Pentagon, with F22s, nuclear aircraft carriers, intercontinental ballistic missiles, and battalions of the best armor in the history of mankind, was like an elephant attacked by a mouse — mighty, but helpless in its mammoth rage.
Our best hope was in the hands of the gray-bearded intelligence professionals who fanned out across the world. Supplementing the skeleton crew of staff officers left in the wake of President Clinton's anti-intelligence scourging of the CIA, the volunteers went to the Middle East, Asia, Europe, Africa, South America, to the most remote and isolated outposts in the world. Sometimes they worked with friendly forces, and sometimes they worked alone. They focused like a laser beam on one thing: Stop the next attack.
Their mission: Seek and destroy the terrorist planners, facilitators, trainers, financiers, and their infrastructure wherever they were.
Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, CIA officers, both the contractors and the overextended staff officers, launched dozens of initiatives. The CIA Counterterrorism Center’s motto, “Deny, Disrupt, Destroy,” became the reason for our living. We left our families for months on end and sacrificed personal and professional lives to fight the Global War on Terror (GWOT). Google “Jihadists in Paradise,” for an unauthorized account of one of my contributions (I have been advised that I can neither confirm nor deny).
As I did my part in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa, my family tried to maintain a semblance of normalcy at home. My son was in eighth grade in September 2001. I did not see him graduate the next summer. I was home less than six months for each of the first three of his high school years.
Even with my nightly phone calls, his attitude and grades plummeted in my absence. He went from a happy, engaged, charming 13-year-old with straight A’s and a focus on the future to a sullen, uncommunicative, high school flunky. I put my successful and lucrative executive recruiting business on hold for eight years. Finally, after five years of constant travel, my family sacrifice account was overdrawn. Coming home was an option for me, and I took it.
Others did not take that option, and they sacrificed the quality of their marriages, participation in their children’s and grandchildren’s lives, the profitability of their businesses, and more. Personal and professional issues festered and rotted while they fought to keep America safe and prevented further attacks on our homeland.
In contrast, where was Eric Holder? Before leaving President Clinton’s employ, he orchestrated the pardons of several Puerto Rican separatist terrorists. Then in 2003, as a partner in the Washington law firm of Covington & Burling, Holder’s client, Chiquita Brands, admitted paying to support terrorist death squads in Colombia and paid a $25 million fine. During the time my friends worked to disrupt and destroy terrorist networks threatening America, Holder’s firm represented — for free — 16 terrorist detainees at Guantanamo.
Has he made any personal or professional sacrifices since his country was attacked in 2001? If he has, it is difficult to find them. When the special prosecutor comes calling, maybe someone from Covington & Burling can represent my colleagues for free, like they did for Lakhdar Boumedienne and 10 other terrorists in Gitmo.
The Holder/Obama Global War on the CIA (GWCIA) has only just begun, as it debuted with “grisly revelations” of revving drills, gunshots in the next cell, and threats against a terrorist’s children. The GWOT is not for the faint of heart, nor the queasy. No war ever has been. There may be slight improprieties stashed in the CIA’s closets, but the liberal-appeasing GWCIA is foolhardy and dangerous.
Mike Spann, was the first to die in the GWOT. He won’t have to worry about the Holder/Obama GWCIA. But others in the agency are very worried. While we sacrificed to achieve incremental victories, Holder and Obama plotted and schemed — not against those “evil-mongers” who killed our countrymen, but against those of us hunting the terrorists. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark. The odor is not from Langley, Mr. Holder.
Kent Clizbe is a former member of the CIA's Directorate of Operations. In 2001, in the aftermath of Sept. 11, he returned to the CIA to serve multiple counter-terrorism deployments. In 2005, he was awarded the Intelligence Community Seal Medallion for his anti-terrorism work.
New Jersey Has Most Expensive ZIP in Country
Now you know why the call it the Garden State -- because it takes a lot of "green" to live there.
Alpine, N.J. has just been named America's most expensive ZIP code by Forbes.com on its annual list. The money mag's site says that homes in Jersey's 07620 have a median asking price of $4.14 million dollars. But as whopping as that is, it's actually down 23 percent from last year.
Manhattan's West Village (10014), came in at third place on the top-500 list, with median asking prices of $3.5 million, which was down 24 percent over the past twelve months.
And it seems the West Village can't compete with Alpine in terms of star wattage either. The New Jersey town is home to a number of celebrities including Chris Rock, Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige, Sean Combs and Patrick Ewing, the Daily News reported.

The News notes that even though the town boasts a number of black superstars, it's nearly 80% white -- and Rock has pointed that out in his comedy bits.
"My next-door neighbor is a white dentist," he's joked. "The only way a black dentist could ever live there would be if he invented teeth!"
The other New York ZIP in the top ten was Lenox Hill's 10065, at #9, where media home prices were $3.18 million, down 10 percent.
07926 in Brookside, N.J. rounded out the top ten, with home prices of $3.12 million. All of the other top ten spots were taken up by California.
When contacted by the Daily News, the mayor of Alpine, Paul Tomasko, was a little shy at first, saying "We make no effort to enter into this kind of competition." He later called back to add "Alpine is a wonderful place to live and own a home. We're glad Forbes thinks so too."
Jaycee Lee Dugard: Bone fragment discovered close to garrido's house
- Jaycee tells her daughters the truth about their father
- Did Nancy Garrido keep Jaycee captive for four months while her husband was in prison?
- Garrido's father: 'I believe my son killed prostitutes'
- Garrido was never a suspect in Jaycee's kidnapping
- Past rape victim speaks of terror of Jaycee's story
Investigators say it is too early to tell if the bone is human.
The discovery came as it emerged that Nancy Garrido, wife of suspected serial killer Phillip Garrido who accused of holding Jaycee captive and repeatedly raping her, may have played a far larger role in the kidnapping than previously thought.

Jaycee has told her daughters that she was kidnapped, and that their father was her captor for 18 years.
Relatives said she broke the news to her daughters, aged 15 and 11, because they were distraught that he was in prison.
Yesterday the FBI finished combing Garrido's house and garden and a neighbouring property for possible links to unsolved crimes in the area.

Investigators recovered several other pieces of evidence during the four days they spent searching the two parcels of land.
Garrido once lived on his neighbour's property in a shed. Residents say he once worked as the property caretaker and helped out an elderly man who lived there several years ago.
He is already suspected of murdering a 15-year-old girl and as many as ten prostitutes who were killed close to a factory where he used to work.
The 15-year-old was Mexican-American Lisa Diane Norrell, who disappeared from a party at a dance hall in Antioch in November 1998.
Eight days later, her asphyxiated body, hands bunched into fists, was found face down in the yard of a landscaping firm in Pittsburg, her hometown.
At his 1977 trial, Garrido reportedly told the court he was a peeping tom and had strong rape desires.
He also admitted leering at girls as young as seven and 10, and said he exposed himself to some of them.
Were these missing girls other victims of Garrido?

- Michaela Garecht
Michaela went missing three months after Garrido was freed from jail after serving ten years of a rape sentence in August 1988.
The blonde nine-year-old was forced into a man's car as she went to the shops near her home in Hayward, 30 miles from Antioch. Her mother Sharon Murch said the discovery of Jaycee gave her fresh hope.
- Amanda Campbell
Six months after Jaycee's kidnap, Amanda was snatched in Fairfield, 40 miles away, while cycling to a friend's house and her bike was found dumped in a field
- Ilene Misheloff
Two months after Michaela's disappearance, Ilene was abducted while walking home from school in the Dublin area, 25 miles from Garrido's home.
- Lisa Norrell
15-year-old Lisa Diane Norrell, a Mexican-American, who disappeared from a party at a dance hall in Antioch in November 1998.
Eight days later, her asphyxiated body, hands bunched into fists, was found face down in the yard of a landscaping firm in Pittsburg, her hometown.
Her stepfather Carl Probyn told ABC: 'It’s going to take a lot of therapy for them. We’ re going to have to take it minute by minute. These girls are so fragile.
'Jaycee had to explain to them, like two days ago, that she had been kidnapped. They didn’t even know that. They are upset about this because that’s their father and he’s in jail.'
Joann Behrman-Lippert, a psychologist who has researched child abductions, told The Times: 'For these children their father is still their father, no matter what has happened. It’s very complex and not a black-or-white situation.'
Meanwhile Garrido's father believes his son was a serial sex killer.
Acknowledging that he thinks his son preyed on women victims, Manuel Garrido, 87, said: 'He was a sex addict. That was his problem.'
For four months in 1993, Phillip Garrido was in jail, for breaking the terms of his parole.
She was also likely pregnant with her first daughter.
This time period is going to come under great scrutiny as prosecutors look to establish the role Nancy played in the kidnapping and captivity of Jaycee.

Psychologists will need to consider whether Nancy played a captor, or whether she herself was little more than a victim of Phillip.
Phillip Garrido's brother Ron said that she 'was a robot': 'She would do anything he asked. I told my wife: "It's no different from [Charles] Manson and those girls.'
As police continued to search the ramshackle property in northern California where Garrido held Jaycee, 29, and the two daughters he fathered by her, investigations were re-opened into the disappearance of at least three schoolgirls two decades ago.
Photos show that one of them, Michaela Garecht, bore an astonishing resemblance to Jaycee.
With the realisation that Garrido and his wife travelled 170 miles from their home to snatch Jaycee, then aged 11, off the street on her way to school, detectives are checking for possible links with dozens more missing girl cases.
Garrido's father has said his son's personality became warped after he was in a bad motorcycle crash and started taking LSD.
And yesterday, when asked if he thought his son could be capable of murder, Manuel Garrido said: 'I believe my son killed the prostitutes.'
'She must have known about Jaycee,' he said. 'She lived there all this time. She could have done something, but didn't.'
He said his ex-wife, who has had dementia for the last six years, was moved to a nursing home following the discovery of Jaycee and her two daughters a week ago.
Police investigating the 1998 murder of 15-year-old Lisa Norrell and ten prostitutes in the nearby town of Pittsburg in the 1990s were involved in the painstaking search of the Garridos' home over the weekend.

Anyone who tries to enter the home is now subject to arrest, Lee said.
On Friday Garrido and his wife pleaded not guilty to charges of rape and kidnapping.
Nancy's defence is likely to be that she was afraid of her husband, but detectives pointed out that Garrido spent five months in prison in 1993 on a parole violation, leaving his wife to watch guard over Jaycee, who was then 13.
As the probe widened, details continued to emerge about Jaycee's years imprisoned in Garrido's back garden.
Neighbours said she was never in shackles and, like her daughters Angel, 11, and Starlet, 15, appeared in awe of Garrido.
Cheyvonne Molino, who invited the girls to her daughter's 16th birthday party a fortnight ago, said they loved the Disney TV show Hannah Montana, while Jaycee spoke of wanting to be a fashion model.
She added: 'People make it seem like these little girls were living like wolves or jungle kids in the backyard dungeon. Perhaps that's it, but they didn't give that visual to me.'
Among the cold cases police may reopen is the disappearance of nine-year-old Michaela Garecht, who was kidnapped from a car park in Hawyard, about an hour's drive from the Garridos' home.
The schoolgirl was pulled into a car in November 1988, three months after Garrido was released from jail for rape.
Two other girls also went missing in the area around the time Jaycee was snatched.
One, 13-year-old Ilene Misheloff, vanished in January 1989 as she walked home from school on her way to an ice skating lesson.
Amanda Campbell, four, has not been seen since she disappeared in her home town of Fairfield in December 1991.
Everyone wants to see Jaycee Dugard daughters photos
New Delhi, Sept 1, 2009: Everyone wants to see Jaycee Dugard daughters photos. Jaycee Dugard daughters are hot searches on the internet. Everyone wants to see them and know as to whether they look like Jaycee Dugard looke
Jaycee was among beautiful kids like most American kids look when she was eleven. We have not seen her photographs so far as police and her family have refused to issue any photograph thus far.
Jaycee Dugard, her kids and her mother have also not appeared before the media as yet and there is very remote possibility that she will talk to the press in foreseeable future.
The sort of life she was forced to lead for the eighteen long years and undergo all sorts of humiliations at the hands of her abductor and stay as his sex slave can be something that will take years to heal.
I just pray that the little Jaycee that her family knew of till eighteen years ago is again able to enjoy her life and put her life back on track.
Her kids are also in a very bad condition. They were never allowed to attend school or visit hospitals. They are in a very disadvantaged condition and would take years to behave as normal kids.
Everyone now wants to ensure that her rapist and his wife who helped her beastly husband to enslave a small cute girl must be given the harshest of punishments.
But really do we have a punishment for such crimes? I near not.
No amount of imprisoning him, or even a death penalty can do justice with the crime that he committed on a small child for 18 long years.
Jaycee Dugard and daughters appeared normal to outsiders
To many friends, neighbors, and Phillip Garrido's clients, Jaycee Dugard and her daughters, Starlet and Angel appeared normal. As reports of their ordeal have surfaced, it seems apparent that no one was aware that anything was amiss. Many neighbors and acquaintances of Phillip Garrido have stated that he seemed odd and eccentric, yet none but one neighbor was concerned enough to contact authorities. When it comes to Jaycee Dugard, Starlet, and Angel, it appears that everyone who encountered them found them to be polite, friendly, and was well liked. When news first broke about Jaycee Dugard and her backyard imprisonment, the public had the immediate perception that she was continually locked in a shed and treated like a savage beast. However, now reports are surfacing that not only did Jaycee Dugard frequently use a computer, but her daughters attended a birthday party and liked Hannah Montana.
One of the most difficult concepts for many to understand is how Jaycee, Starlet, and Angel could continue to live under these circumstances. Hearing that neighbors and other associates found the trio to be ‘normal’ only highlights the perception that Officer Ally Jacobs and Lisa Campbell had. In 18 years of captivity, no one was akin to the fact that something wasn’t right with Jaycee Dugard. When her children were born, still, no one was alerted. We don’t know how long Jaycee and her daughters have been spending time outside the home, however.
In Phillip Garrido’s own words he stated that “It’s a disgusting thing that took place,” exactly what those disgusting things were, we are unsure. Yet, to those who were in actual contact with Jaycee, Starlet, and Angel no one was aware that they were living a nightmare, unfortunately, it is quite possible that Starlet and Angel never had any idea that anything was wrong. Since all they have ever known is the environment provided to them by Phillip Garrido, it is very likely that they have no concept of the grave deceptions that have occurred and are truly missing the Garridos. This type of response is typical from those suffering from the Stockholm syndrome.
Chevyonne Molino stated, “The media made it seem like these little girls were living like wolves or jungle kids in the backyard dungeon. Perhaps that's it, but they didn't give that visual to me. “ She went on to say that the girls were well-mannered and polite. This is a startling contrast to the impression that the girls gave to the two officers who were instrumental in Phillip Garrido’s arrest and Jaycee Dugard’s subsequent reunion with her family. How could two officers see in one hour what associates couldn’t see for years?
Jaycee was known to others as Allissa and Phillip Garrido often referred to her, Jaycee, and Starlet as ‘his girls.’ What is interesting to note, is that when Officer Jacobs and Campbell questioned both Jaycee and Starlet, they didn’t refer to Jaycee as their mother, but referred to her as their older sister. How Starlet and Angel viewed Jaycee has also been kept from the public. Yet, since they referred to their mother as their sister while in public, it seems clear that their conversations were rehearsed. The three may have been able to keep their horrible truth hidden from neighbors and customers, but thankfully, they didn’t appear normal to Officer Jacobs or Lisa Campbell. Had they appeared ‘normal’ to them; Jaycee Dugard might not ever have been found.
In this video by Phillip Garrido, he claims that he has never touched his daughters and that when the full story is revealed it will be a ‘powerful, heartwarming’ story. What is heartwarming about the Jaycee Dugard case has nothing to do with Phillip Garrido, but rather that two officers stepped in and Jaycee Dugard was finally reunited with her true family.

Photo 2- A police investigator searches a shed next door to the home of Phillip Garrido in Antioch, California, August 31, 2009. Garrido and his wife, Nancy, have been charged in the 1991 kidnapping of Jaycee Dugard who was 11 years old at the time. Authorities believe that the now 29-year-old Dugard spent most of the past two decades living in squalid tents and sheds in Garrido's backyard. He is accused of fathering two children with her. Police have expanded their search to include the neighboring property.
Photo 3- A Contra Costa sheriff inspects the backyard of the Phillip Garrido residence Monday, Aug. 31, 2009, in Antioch, Calif. Police have resumed searching for any links to unsolved crimes at the home of the Northern California man charged with kidnapping a little girl and hiding her in his backyard for 18 years.
Teachers day, Teachers Day India speech by A.P.J. ABDUL KALAM
'A student spends 25,000 hours in the campus. The school must have the best of teachers who have the ability to teach, love teaching and build moral qualities' - A.P.J. ABDUL KALAM
Following is the Full text of the Indian President's ( A.P.J. ABDUL KALAM ) address on the eve of Teachers' Day in India , 2003.Dear listeners of All India Radio and teachers, my greetings to all of you. I am talking to you on the special occasion of Teachers' Day. On this day, we gratefully remember the great educationist Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, whose dream was that "Teachers should be the best minds in the country". Hence, Teachers' Day is very important for all our people, for our students and even for all the parents, as the teachers lay the foundation for creating enlightened citizens for the nation. On this day, I would like to recall three teachers who helped me in shaping my life. To begin with I am going to talk to you about my father Janab Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen, as a teacher. My father taught me a great lesson when I was a young boy. What was that lesson? It was just after India got Independence. At that time Panchayat board elections took place at Rameswaram. My father was elected Panchayat Board member and on the same day he was also elected the president of the Rameswaram Panchayat Board. Rameswaram Island was a beautiful place with 30,000 populations. At that time they elected my father as Panchayat Board president not because he belonged to a particular religion or a particular caste or spoke a particular language or for his economic status. He was elected only on the basis of his nobility of mind and for being a good human being. Dear listeners, I would like to narrate one incident that took place on the day he was elected president of the Panchayat Board. I was at that time studying in school. Those days we did not have electricity and we used to study under ration kerosene lamps. I was reading the lessons loudly and I heard a knock at the door. We never used to lock the door in Rameswaram in those days. Somebody opened the door, came in and asked me where my father was? I told him that father had gone for the evening namaz. Then he said, I have brought something for him, can I keep it here? Since my father had gone for namaz, I shouted for my mother to get her permission to receive the item. Since she was also on the amaz there was no response. I asked the person to leave the item on the cot. After that I continued my studies. I used to learn by reading aloud in my younger days. I was reading loud and fully concentrating on my studies. At that time my father came in and saw a tambalum kept in the cot. He asked me "What is this? Who has given that?" I told him, "Somebody came and has kept this for you". He opened the cover of the tambalum and found there was a costly dhoti, angawastram, some fruits and some sweets and he could see the slip that the person had left behind. I was the youngest child of my father, he really loved me and I also loved him a lot. He was upset at the sight of the tambalum and gifts. That was the first time I saw him very angry and also that was the first time I had got a thorough beating from him. I got frightened and started weeping. My mother embraced and consoled me. Then my father came and touched my shoulder lovingly with affection and advised me not to receive any gift without his permission. He quoted an Islamic Hadith, which states that, "When the Almighty appoints a person to a position, He takes care of his provision. If a person takes anything beyond that, it is an illegal gain." Then he told me that it is not a good habit. A gift is always accompanied by some purpose and a gift is a dangerous thing. It is like touching a snake and getting the poison in turn. This lesson stands out always in my mind even when I am in my seventies. This incident, taught me a very valuable lesson for my life. It is deeply embedded in my mind. I would like also to mention the writings in Manu Smriti which states that "By accepting gifts the divine light in the person gets extinguished". Manu warns every individual against accepting gifts for the reason that it places the acceptor under an obligation in favour of the person who gave the gift and ultimately it results in making a person to do things which are not permitted according to law. I am sharing this thought, with all of you, particularly the young ones, do not be carried away by any gift which comes with a purpose and through which one loses his personality greatly. Do you think, you can follow this in your life? I will be very happy if you can practice this sincerely. When I think of my second teacher, I am reminded of my childhood days when I was studying in 8th class at the age of 13. I had a teacher, Shri Siva Subramania Iyer. He was one of the very good teachers in our school. All of us loved to attend his class and hear him. One day he was teaching about a bird's flight. He drew a diagram of a bird on the blackboard depicting the wings, tail and the body structure with the head. He explained how birds create the lift and fly. He also explained to us how they change direction while flying. For nearly 25 minutes he gave the lecture with various information such as lift, drag, how the birds fly in a formation of 10, 20 or 30. At the end of the class, he wanted to know whether we understood how birds fly. I said, I did not understand. When I said this, the teacher asked the other students whether they understood or not. Many students said that they also did not understand. He did not get upset by our response since he was a committed teacher. Our teacher said that he would take all of us to the sea shore. That evening the whole class was at the sea shore of Rameswaram. We enjoyed the roaring sea waves knocking at the sandy hills in the pleasant evening. Birds were flying with sweet chirping voice. He showed the sea birds in formations of 10 to 20 numbers. We saw the marvellous formations of birds with a purpose and we were all amazed. He showed us the birds and asked us to see that when the birds fly, what they looked like. We saw the wings flapping. He asked us to look at the tail portion with the combination of flapping wings and twisting tail. We noticed closely and found that the birds in that condition flew in the direction they desired. Then he asked us a question, "Where the engine is and how it is powered"? The bird is powered by its own life and the motivation of what it wants. All these things were explained to us within fifteen minutes. We all understood the dynamics from this practical example. How nice it was. Our teacher was a great teacher; he could give us a theoretical lesson coupled with a live practical example available in nature. This is real teaching. I am sure many of the teachers in schools and colleges will follow this example. For me, it was not merely an understanding of how a bird flies. The bird's flight entered into me and created a special feeling. From that evening, I thought that my future study has to be with reference to flight and flight systems. I am saying this because my teacher's teaching and the event that I witnessed decided my future career. Then one evening after the classes, I asked the teacher, "Sir, please tell me, how to progress further in learning all about flight." He patiently explained to me that I should complete 8th class, and then go to high school, and then I should go to engineering college that may lead to education on flight. If I complete all my education with excellence, I might do something connected with flight sciences. This advice and the bird flying exercise given by my teacher, really gave me a goal and a mission for my life. When I went to college, I took physics. When I went to engineering in Madras Institute of Technology, I took aeronautical engineering. Thus my life was transformed as a rocket engineer, aerospace engineer and technologist. That one incident of my teacher teaching the lesson, showing the visual live example proved to be a turning point in my life which eventually shaped my profession. A student during his school life upto 10+2 spends 25,000 hours in the school campus. His life is, more influenced by the teachers and the school environment. Therefore, the school must have the best of teachers with ability to, teach and love teaching and build moral qualities. Teachers should become role models. Similarly, the student must be alert to build himself with best of qualities and to get ignited with a vision for his or her future life. I would like to share with you another experience with my teacher Prof. Satish Dhawan. First, I worked in Delhi with the Ministry of Defence. Later I joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in 1958 at the Aeronautical Development Establishment at Bangalore. There with the advice of the Director, I took up the development of hovercraft. Hovercraft design needed the development of a ducted contra-rotating propeller for creating a smooth flow balancing the torques. I did not know how to design a contra-rotating propeller though I knew how to design a conventional propeller. Some of my friends told me that I could approach Prof. Satish Dhawan of the Indian Institute of Science, who was well known for his aeronautical research, for help. I took permission from my Director Dr Mediratta and went to Prof Dhawan who was sitting in a small room in the Indian Institute of Science with a lot of books in the background and a blackboard on the wall. Prof Dhawan asked me what the problem was that I wanted to discuss. I explained the problem.. He told me that it was really a challenging task and he would teach me the design if I attended his classes in IISc between 2 pm to 3 pm on all Saturdays for the next six weeks. He was a visionary teacher. He prepared the schedule for the entire course and wrote it on the black board. He also gave me the reference material and books I should read before I start attending the course. I considered, this as a great opportunity and I started attending the discussion and started meeting him regularly. Before commencing each meeting, he would ask critical questions and assess my understanding of the subject. That was for the first time that I realized how a good teacher prepares himself for teaching with meticulous planning and prepares the student for acquisition of knowledge. This process continued for the next six weeks. I got the capability for designing the contra-rotating propeller. Prof Dhawan told me that I was ready for developing the contra-rotating propeller for a given hovercraft configuration. That was the time I realized that Prof Dhawan was not only a teacher but also a fantastic development engineer of aeronautical systems. Later during the critical phases of testing, Prof Dhawan was with me to witness the test and find solutions to the problems. After reaching the smooth test phase, the contra-rotating propeller went through 50 hours of continuous testing. Prof Dhawan witnessed the test himself and congratulated me. That was a great day for me when I saw the contra rotating propeller designed by my team performing to the mission requirement in the hovercraft. However, at that time, I did not realize that Prof Dhawan would become chairman, ISRO and that I would get the opportunity to work with him as a project director in the development of the satellite launch vehicle SLV-3 for injecting the Rohini satellite into the orbit. Nature has its own way to link the student's dream and real life later. This was the first design in my career which gave me the confidence to design many complex aerospace systems in future. The hovercraft could fly just above the ground level carrying two passengers. I was the first pilot for this hovercraft and I could control and maneuver the vehicle in any direction. Through this project I learnt the techniques of designing and developing the contra-rotating propeller. Above all, I learnt that in a project, problems will always crop up; we should not allow problems to be our masters but we should defeat the problems. Then successes will sparkle. The three teachers in my life; what did they give me? In an integrated way it can be said, that any enlightened human being can be created by three unique characteristics. One is moral value system. That I got from my father the hard way. Secondly, the teacher becoming a role model. Not only does the student learn, but the teacher shapes his life with great dreams and aims. Finally, the education and learning process has to culminate in the creation of professional capability leading to confidence and will power to make a design, to make a product, to make a system, bravely combating many problems. What a fortune and blessing I had from my three teachers. Among the listeners, there may be many parents, many teachers and a large number of students. Every one of us in this planet creates a page in human history irrespective of who he/she is. I realize my experience is a small dot in human life, but that dot has a life and light. This light, let it light many lamps. My best wishes to all of you on this occasion of Teachers' Day. Thank you. |

Time to say ‘thank you’
It was Teachers’ Day and the teachers put up a grand show. But the students had something for the teachers too! |

Those school girl days of telling tales and biting nails are gone,
But in my mind, they live on and on...
So sang my students. This adaptation of the song originally comes from the hit movie, “To Sir, with Love”. As a teacher, I can appreciate the genuine warmth with which my students sang this song to me on Teachers’ Day last year.
“But why is Teachers’ Day celebrated on September 5 in India?” I asked.
Dolly, with her quick wit and keen interest replied, “It is because it is the birth anniversary of one of India’s greatest political stalwarts, also a former President of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan.”
“Now can any one tell me about another Indian President who also extolled the virtues of teachers?”
Renu said, “Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who loved the inquisitive and innocent minds of children.”
“Yes,” I said. “Please read his autobiography, Wings of Fire.”
“Ma’am, what has the school organised for us, this Teachers’ Day?” asked Bindu.
“A skit and a cultural programme by the teachers.”
Time to celebrate
The bell rang, indicating that all the classes should assemble in the auditorium for the Teachers’ Day celebration. After some commotion, the girls were all there and the principal welcomed everyone.
The curtains swung open — the show had started! It was a cameo to show how education had evolved over the years. In the background was a huge picture of trees and mountains and rivers. In the foreground, there were teachers dressed up as students learning from a guru.
The backdrop kept changing as the skit showed how the teacher-student relationship evolved over the years, with outstanding examples, like that of the questioning methodology of Socrates, the guru-student rapport in ancient India, like that at Nalanda University, and the open air education at Santiniketan by Rabindranath Tagore. The teachers then performed a South Indian dance. The students clapped their hands keeping time to the beat. No one could believe that the teachers were so talented and capable of putting up such a good show as it is earnestly believed that, “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach”.
Finally, the surprise! The teachers were requested to take their students to their respective classrooms. What was this surprise?
One of my students, Nexy, said, "For Ma’am, we have a wonderful gift. Ma’am, can you guess what it is?" she asked me.
"Give me a clue."
"Well, it is something very beautiful."
"I know, it must be a bouquet of beautiful red roses."`
"No, ma’am, it’s something which is beautiful but more enduring."
"A pair of diamond earrings?"
"Good try, ma’am. But you know we’ll never be able to afford diamonds, though they are a girl’s best friend. I’ve kept you guessing for too long. It is beautiful, enduring and a wonderful companion. We’re presenting to you a kitten with orange and white fur, who will be your faithful and lovable friend and companion. We know you love cats. That is why this choice of gift."
Nexy gave me the kitten and the whole class applauded. I was touched by this wonderful gesture.
Truly, Teachers’ Day is all about loving and caring and sharing between the teacher and the students.
Things to do on teachers day
- Step 1Ask the teacher questions regarding classroom needs. You may receive a long list of answers since many classrooms, especially at the elementary
school level, are woefully under-funded. Decide if you can provide the requested items by appealing to local business leaders, soliciting donations from co workers, or buying items yourself.
- Step 2Write correspondence to thank the teacher for all the hard work he or she does—and send a copy of your note to the school principal. Teachers appreciate the fact that they have made a difference. More importantly, it is nice that the principal knows that they have positively impacted a student's life.
- Step 3Volunteer in your child's classroom. Teachers are very grateful when parents offer to bring food, make copies, read stories aloud, become "class parents" or even drive or chaperone during school field trips.
- Step 4Encourage your child to write a thank you letter to a teacher. Although students may idolize their teachers, they may never show it, particularly at the middle and high school levels. It really makes a teacher's day when he or she corresponds with former students.
- Step 5Suggest that your child visit a former teacher. High school teachers especially love it when a favorite student, now in college, returns to pay a visit. Teachers care about past students and love to stay in touch.
- Step 6Work with the school PTA or other community group to host a teacher appreciation luncheon at the end of each semester. Teachers enjoy free food, and the PTA is a wonderful forum in which to brainstorm various teacher appreciation ideas.
Four win President's Award for inspiring teachers

[Above: Sharon Ann Cardoza, one of this year's President Award winners for teachers, pictured here with her students. ]
Ms Sharon Ann Cardoza, 38, subscribes to the philosophy that "every child matters" and personally folds a paper crane for each of her students as a reminder for them to believe in themselves.
The teacher at Farrer Park Primary school believes in getting to know her pupils better, and spends time with her pupils during recess and after school hours to assure them that she is always there for them.
"I believe strongly that we should always give our children hope. That's one thing we must never take away from them no matter their performance," said Ms Cardoza.
She once went beyond the call of duty for a boy in her class who was academically weak and had poor social skills.
When she found out that he had to go without food on some days as his mother had lost her job, she bought food for the family. When the boy fractured his leg some time later, she fetched him to school everyday in a taxi so that he would not miss school.
The passion and commitment to students are exemplified by Ms Cardoza and three other teachers. The four of them received this year's President's Award for Teachers during a Teachers' Day reception held at the Istana today.
The other teachers are Mr Terry Tan, 51, from Anglo-Chinese School (Primary), Madam Wong Lai Fong, 38, from Anderson Secondary School and Ms Lucy Fernandez, 42, from Catholic High School.
The award recognises the commitment of teachers towards the total development of students and to nation-building.
"These award-winning teachers are not just passionate about imparting knowledge, but also care deeply
about nurturing children as whole persons," said Mrs Josephine Teo, chairperson for the Government Parliamentary Committee for Education.
That education is not just about imparting book knowledge, but also developing the individual is what Madam Wong firmly believes in.
"I often share with fellow teachers that students are not in school to learn just content knowledge but values which cannot possibly be taught in textbooks," she said.
Counselling students on their correct choice of behaviour is part of Madam Wong's mentoring approach. She won over a notorious class known for being rude and unmotivated simply by talking to them.
"To know that a teacher has placed strong belief in them really encouraged them to work hard."
Modi to interact with Gujarat students on Teacher's Day
Ahmedabad: If you are wondering what prompts Chief Minister Narendra Modi to ban books and movies in the state, you can ask him on Teacher's Day on September 5. Like last year, Narendra Modi will be addressing a crowd of lakhs of students of primary and secondary schools in the state through video conferencing. However, seven districts of the state, where by-elections are scheduled, will be excluded.
Last year, when Modi started this move, many eyebrows were twisted in surprises. It was made mandatory for school principals to arrange for TV sets on the premises to ensure that students and teachers get to see the live show.
According to a source, preparation for this grand show has already started. All schools and colleges have been asked to arrange for TV sets to ensure that Modi's live show on September 5 is viewed by all. Principals, on the other hand, are not happy with the move and are saying that the chief minister is playing a spoilsport on Teacher's Day. An angry principal, on the condition of anonymity, said that the chief minister is not doing anything for the betterment of the students.
However, owing to the impending elections, schools in the seven districts will not have the opportunity. These districts are Chotila, Jasdan, Dhoraji, Kodinar, Dehgam, Sami Harij and Danta.
Sources said that the schools have been asked to collect questions from the students. Once the questions are collected they will be scrutinised at district level, and only 'best' questions will be answered by the chief minister.
"We are expecting some questions related to the recent ban on book written by Jaswant Singh. However, we are yet to get the list of questions. We are not sure about the number of issues the chief minister will address," said a highly placed source.
On the other hand, when asked about this year's programme for Teacher's Day, principal secretary for education in the state Hasmukh Adhia said that preparations are afoot and schools have been asked to collect questions from the students.
Happy Teachers’ Day i miss my school teachers
September 5 is round the corner. But what’s special about that day?Well, it’s Teachers’ Day…a day to remember your teachers and say a big ‘Thank you!’. |

On this special day : Thank you.
Ask any adult. They may not remember what they learnt in school, but every one of them will tell you the name of the teacher they admired the most. They will tell you why they remember that teacher after all these years. Goes to show how much our teachers are part of our growing years! Our school life (with so much to study) is happy because of our teachers. You do have a teacher you think is special, right?
“My favourite? My Science teacher,” said Naren, a Std. VIII student. “She is very strict, doesn’t spare anyone who misbehaves or comes without doing home-work. You miss home-work, you lose marks. You delay it, she won’t even accept it.” But the kids love her because she is fair to all. She allows time for students to chatter in the class. “She teaches the principles of science in a fun way,” he says. “She shows videos to explain scientific principles.” Once she made them do a children’s book about cells in a way that small children could understand. “I wrote about an adventure of a boy named Max who is whisked away by the amazing Professor Cellular in a small spaceship travelling through cells. On the way, he explains things like the mitochondria, nucleus and the golgi bodies.”

In gratitude : Getting the show on the road.
Overall, a good teacher is strict and fun at the same time, knows how to get along with kids, has a vast knowledge of her subject, thinks of the quality of the students’ education first, gives students fair and just punishment for academic crime — forgetting home-work, misbehaving and chattering when you should be working, not respecting the rules of the school.
Me? I like a teacher who gives you something to take home to think about besides homework.

Teacher, Philosopher, Statesman
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s birthday (September 5, 1888), is celebrated as Teacher’s Day. He was born into a middle class family at Tirutani in Tamil Nadu state, a town in Madras Presidency, British India. Radhakrishnan went through most of his education on scholarships. He joined the Voorhee’s College in Vellore but switched to the Madras Christian College. He graduated with a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the Madras Christian College in 1906.
In 1921, he was appointed as a professor in philosophy to occupy the King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science at the University of Calcutta. In 1929, Radhakrishnan was invited to take the post vacated by Principal J. Estlin Carpenter in Manchester College, Oxford. For his services to education, he was knighted by the British Government in 1931, but did not use the title in personal life preferring instead his academic title ‘Doctor’. He was the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University from 1931 to 1936. In 1936, Radhakrishnan was named Spalding Professor of Eastern Religions and Ethics at the University of Oxford, and was elected a Fellow of All Souls College. In 1939, Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya invited him to become Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University. He continued as its Vice-Chancellor till January, 1948. When India became independent in 1947, Radhakrishnan represented India at UNESCO, and was later Ambassador of India to the Soviet Union, from 1949 to 1952. He was also elected to the Constituent Assembly of India. Radhakrishnan was elected as the first Vice President of India in 1952.
He was elected as the second President of India (1962-1967). When he became President, some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday. He replied, “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers’ Day.”

New Hyundai Santro Launches in India
After the Suzuki Maruti Estilo, Toyota Fortuner and the Harley Davidson’s bikes, the new Hyundai
Santro will launch in India this month (actually today on September 1st) with a bunch of stylistic changes. H S Lheem, the company Managing Director and CEO, said that the Indian buyers will be able to purchase it by the end of the year.

Although the new Hyundai Santro will feature a hi- tech eRLX engine and important aesthetic changes that took into consideration the customer needs and satisfaction levels, Hyundai India is “fighting” to keep its price unchanged. And since the new Santro remains their best selling model in the Indian market, not adding to the price seems like a good way to boost sales during a tough year.
The South Korean automaker have also revealed that they are considering plans to phase out their aging Getz hatchback
in two years, and that Hyundai i10 and Hyundai i20 will take its place.
Word is that the new Hyundai Santro will be priced from Rs 3 to Rs 4 lacs. Would you buy one?
