Is the Avi Ben Stella car crash a hoax, or a real child in trouble?

Facebook and Twitter are now blanketed with status updates from people posting notices similar to the following:
“PRAYERS NEEDED for 12yr old Avi Ben Stella who, after a serious car crash, is now in a critical coma. Pls. change your status for 1 hr so more people can become aware and... add to the prayers. We would do it for your son, pls. do this for somebody else's son.”
Is it possible that this is a request for prayers for a real child who is in trouble?  Yes, it is possible.  But is it likely?  Probably not.
The internet abounds with bogus viral messages like the Avi Ben Stella post, which take off and seem to take on a life of their own.  Most of the time, the stories are simply untrue.  Some are mere pranks, while others have a more malicious intent.
A search through news sites yields no stories about a child named Avi Ben Stella being injured in a car accident.  Snopes.com has the story classified as “undetermined” as of the writing of this article, and indicates the story has been floating around since mid-August 2009.  Google indicates that this is one of the most highly searched stories on the internet, and yet no one can find anything to verify it is true.
According to another Examiner, threads on the name Avi Ben Stella eventually lead to a  page which tries to load malware on your computer.  This seems like the most likely explanation of the story's origin.
Before forwarding messages and asking people to pray for children you don't actually know, check out the story on Snopes.com or through legitimate news websites.  Otherwise, while you are praying and recruiting prayer volunteers, someone else will be having a laugh at your expense – and maybe downloading spyware on computers in the process.
And if the story of Avi Ben Stella is true, someone with proof of its truth needs to come forward and set the record straight.

The Voile CRB Telemark Ski Binding

This binding, which comes in a Women’s specific version, is arguably one of the best all around bindings on the market right now for many reasons. Anyone just getting into telemark skiing will find it ideal because of its release capability. The CRB or “Complete Release Binding” will take the jitters away from those afraid of fall related knee injuries and make those switching over from alpine breathe a sigh of relief. It is also the only binding on the market that releases in the event of a backward fall.
Voile made sure the price point isn’t scary either, as the CRB comes in at an affordable $175.00 and it’s “din like” settings are easy to set with the aid of the recommended settings chart that comes in the box.
Those who are more advanced should consider the benefits of this binding. The CRB is climbing wire compatible for touring and its release feature allows separation from your skis in the event of an avalanche. When your skis can’t pull you down you have a greater chance of ending up near the surface of the flow.
The CRB also comes complete with ski brakes that engage just like alpine bindings and are just about as easy to get back into after released. Remember to specify your boot size; mondo size 24-26.4 / US size 5-8.5 for short rod and 27-31/9-13 for standard rod lengths. Ski waist width is needed for the available brakes sizes. The CRB has “alpine”, “x-wide” and “Insane” brake widths of 68mm-80mm, 82mm-92mm and 100mm-110mm respectively. For those of you with K2 skis you’ll need to get the specific screw kit, available for a meager four bucks.

The Rossignol Yama Telemark Ski Review

I know you might think it is a bit early for skiing, but if you’re thinking about getting some new stuff, ski companies are releasing 2010 products right now. Also, in three weeks, the companies that train area specialists to mount your bindings, wax and repair skis and boards will begin holding yearly seminars at Pocono resorts. Winter is right around the corner.
Let’s take a look at the Rossignol Yama. It’s a telemark ski that has become a key weapon in Rossi’s Backcountry arsenal and is available again for 2010. This is an excellent choice for people just getting into to telemark skiing. It’s not so stiff as to put off a beginner and not so soft as to bore the more advanced.
It measures 121/72/100, which is tip/ underfoot/tail respectively, and comes in 176, 170, 162 and 154 cm lengths. So there’s a good range in there. Its narrow waist makes it great for icy northeast conditions and resort piste.
To add to the performance Rossignol has employed a few cool proprietary technologies namely Dualtec, which combines vertical sidewall construction-which provides excellent transmission of power to the edge, and cap construction- which adds torsional stiffness to the ski and protects the ski sidewalls. They also employed VAS (Vibration Absorbing System) which uses elastomers in the apex areas of the ski edge to diminish chatter. These features combine to make a very stable platform for beginners.
Rossignol also threw in Rossitop technology in the cap construction to make the ski snappy when coming out of turns. This is a great nod to the more advanced skier and a feature that can help carry those starting out to the next level. The Yama retails for about $500, which is a pretty good price considering all the features.
Now all you need are bindings and boots!

Pirate Bay

25 Great Pirate Bay Alternatives

The end of the Pirate Bay is nearing. Even if the deal with GGF doesn’t go through the current owners are likely to sell to one of the other interested parties. For many BitTorrent fans this means that they have to find an alternative. Luckily there are plenty of good ones out there.
pirate bay sinkReplacing The Pirate Bay is easier said then done. The tracker is currently responsible for approximately half of all public torrent transfers, which represents a significant percentage of global Internet traffic.
However, history has shown that BitTorrent users are an adaptive species that simply migrates to the next site when their home bases become uninhabitable.
While private trackers certainly have their place and will accommodate those lucky enough to get an invite, for this article we are interested in sites that are open to everyone, ranging from full Pirate Bay replacements to a do-it-yourself setup.

Full Pirate Bay Alternatives

The only full Pirate Bay alternatives are sites that index torrent files, are open to everyone and also have a working tracker. Unfortunately, there are only a few sites out there that offer this full package -there are four of them below. We decided to include Demonoid here because it tracks many public torrents.

1. Torrentbox

2. 1337x

3. H33t

4. Demonoid (semi-private)

Torrent Indexers

Torrent indexers are sites that have a searchable directory of torrent files, but don’t host a (public) tracker of their own. Mininova has a tracker, but they only allow ‘featured’ torrents uploaded through their content distribution service. The most used torrent indexers are:

5. Mininova

6. isoHunt

7. Torrentreactor

8. BTjunkie

Torrent Meta-Seach Engines

BitTorrent meta-search engines are yet another brand of torrent sites. They don’t have a tracker and don’t host any torrent files on their servers. Instead they search for and link to torrents hosted on third party sites.

9. Torrentz

10. Nowtorrents

11. Qtorrents

12. Torrent-Finder

Private Trackers (open signup)

Most of the larger private trackers require an invite to join, but there are always a few that allow new members. Below are four of these (open) private trackers and more can be found on Btracs.

13. RTN

14. BiteMyTorrent

15. BitShock

16. TorrentIt

Standalone BitTorrent Trackers

Torrent indexers and meta-search engines can be used to find torrents, but none of them will be of much use without a stable BitTorrent tracker. Standalone BitTorrent trackers are much needed, they handle the communication between downloaders but don’t index any torrents themselves.

17. OpenBitTorrent

18. PublicBitTorrent

19. The Hidden Tracker

20. Denis.Stalker

DIY Pirate Bay Alternatives

The last category of Pirate Bay alternatives are the do-it-yourself projects. By using the three ingredients below The Pirate Bay can be easily rebuilt. It might take a few hours, but then the path to world domination is clear.

21. Pirate Bay Torrents Clone

22. Pirate Bay HTML Clone

23. Torrage: Torrent API

24. Tracker Software

Last but not Least

Google, the mother of all search engines has a filetype:torrent search command that allows you to find torrent files scattered across the Internet. Also, Google’s custom search allows everyone to create their own torrent search engine. Don’t tell the MPAA and RIAA.

25. Google

If you think we missed any good alternatives, please feel free to add your own in the comment section below, while clearly noting which category they fit into.

Telescope

Four Hundred Years Ago, Galileo's Telescope

Changed The World

Galileo used his telescope to advance the theory that the Earth was not the center point of creation, which the Roman Catholic Church considered "false and contrary to scripture."
August 25, 2009
Despite the summer heat, the Senate of Venice assembled on this day in 1609 to view a remarkable scientific instrument. It was built by the well-known astronomer and philosopher from Pisa, Galileo Galilei, and could make distant objects appear closer when viewed through one end of its long pipe. It was a telescope.

Not that Galileo had invented the instrument. Credit for that is generally given to a Dutch stargazer who is almost forgotten today, Hans Lipperhay, who unveiled his basic telescope only the previous year, in 1608.

But Galileo, ever the practical perfectionist, had already improved upon the basic essentials and produced a variable-focus instrument that increased the size of the observed object by eight times.

Why he presented it first of all to the assembled Venetian senators is not clear. But perhaps the Venetians, who had business and commerce in their marrow, saw this instrument as a way to boost their glass lens industry. After all, Venice along with Florence, was the leading center for high-quality ground glass for spectacle lenses and magnifying glasses.

Certainly Galileo made money building and selling his telescope to eager customers, until his designs were overtaken in a relatively short time by more sophisticated types.

The telescope, of course, revolutionized astronomical observation and had a profound impact on overall scientific methodology, by allowing more exact mathematical calculations.
